International Research Regulations and Policies
Main navigation
When conducting research in another country, researchers must follow, local laws, norms and standards for human subjects research. There is an International Compilation of Human Research Standards on the Office of Human Research Protections website. If necessary, obtain in-country ethics board approval before submitting the HawkIRB New Project form to the UI IRB. If there are no local regulations, identify someone with expertise conducting research in that country and ask them to complete the Local Context Review to attach to the HawkIRB New Project form.
See the Off-Campus Research and International Research pages for additional guidance.
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
Research conducted in a European Economic Area (EEA) country must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regarding information privacy. See additional information on the International Research page.
