The foundation of human subjects research regulations were built on the framework of historical documents such as the Belmont Report, Declaration of Helsinki, and the Good Clinical Practice Standards.
There are also a number of federal or state regulations that may apply to the conduct of human subject research conducted by University of Iowa researchers. Those include, but are not limited to,
- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or HIPAA (45 CFR 160 and 45 CFR 164)
- International Research Ethical standards
- State of Iowa code
