Happy Holidays from the Human Subjects Office!

As we look forward to the holidays and 2026, we are drawn to reflect on all that has been changing during 2025. We are so grateful to be a part of the thriving research enterprise at the UI. It is so rewarding to get to do meaningful work with wonderful people.

Highlights of what the Human Subjects Office (HSO) achieved during 2025 include a redesign of three sections and one new section of the HawkIRB application, plus several new educational tools.

2025 HawkIRB changes include:

  • Section II Research Team Members and Key Personnel.

  • A new single IRB (sIRB) section for non-UI individuals and entities.

  • New process for sharing for videos/media files that require IRB review and approval.

  • Changes to HawkIRB Sections X Privacy & Confidentiality and section XII Future research.

  • Rolled out a new template for a new Consent Summary for Key Information Template.

  • And we have ongoing updates section VII with project procedures, recruitment and consent.

New Educational Tools in 2025 include:

We are excited to continue to work with UI researchers to pursue our vital work in human subject research protections. As we look forward to all we have planned for 2026, we send out best wishes for all to have a safe and healthy holiday season and a happy new year!

Join us in 2026 for IRB Insights, a monthly series designed to keep researchers informed about new IRB processes, HawkIRB application improvements, and other updates from the UI Human Research Protection Program (HRPP).

IRB Insights presentations will typically be held on the third Wednesday at noon, replacing the previous monthly IRB Efficiency Initiative information sessions.

Future sessions will expand to additional topics as new regulatory, policy and compliance developments arise, and offer opportunities for ongoing education and discussion with the UI research community.

Whether you’re a seasoned researcher or new to the IRB process, IRB Insights will help you stay ahead of changes and ensure compliance with confidence.
