Expanding the Concept of Vulnerability in Research

Event Date:

Mon, Mar 05, 2018 - 9:30am to 10:30am

Event Location:

Braley Auditorium, 01136 Pomerantz Family Pavilion, University Hospital

“Vulnerable subjects” are any subjects that are susceptible to coercion or undue influence or are unable to give informed consent for themselves. The Code of Federal Regulations for the Protection of Human Subjects establish five categories of vulnerable subjects that are entitled to additional protections. However, there are additional classes of subjects entitled to additional protections that are not explicitly stated in the Code. Researchers may encounter or actively recruit subjects who cannot make decisions for themselves about study participation. If that is the case, the researcher needs to have IRB-approved plans to ensure an ethical recruitment and consent process. Attend this presentation to learn about:

  • Participants with mental health, cognitive, and learning disabilities
  • Research with subordinates
  • Situational vulnerabilities, like pain and severe stress.
  • Best practices for researchers who may encounter vulnerable subjects

Pre-registration is recommended.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa- sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact the Human Subjects Office in advance at (319) 335-6564.
